Buzz Busters Program
The Buzz Busters Program in Bradford County was started in 2003 by then-agent David Dinkins. Members of the public are trained in using integrated pest management practices and applying them to mosquito control.
Because Bradford County has a limited budget, there is little money for integrated pest management and other new technologies and practices. Extension agents and trained volunteers provide a more efficient, eco-friendly mosquito-control program than the county could otherwise afford.
The volunteers take samples of adult and larval mosquito populations on a weekly basis at up to sixteen zones in the county. The larva and adult bodies are collected, counted, and mailed to the Florida Medical Entomology Lab to be part of the statewide mosquito population database. The efforts of the Buzz Busters contribute to local mosquito control as well as to regional and state information.
